Exclusive breastfeeding rate in
Indonesia is still low. Lack of knowledge about the benefits of breastfeeding
and the promotion of infant formula made many mothers fail to breastfeed.
Director General of Nutrition and Maternal Child Health Ministry said Slamet Riyadi Yuwono, based on data Susenas (National Social Economic Survey) in 2010, there were only 33.6 percent of infants aged 0-6 months who were exclusively breastfed. Even the Health Research Association (Riskesdas) 2010 states, only 15.3 percent of infants aged less than 6 months are exclusively breastfed.
Slamet said, there are at least 5 (five) things that affect and cause low exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia. The following is his explanation:
A. Not all hospitals employ 10 LMKM (step that leads Successful Breastfeeding)
First, Slamet said, when the era of the 1990s, the government had created a program called Friendly Babby Hospital. This activity is intended to stimulate health care facilities to participate in helping the government's efforts to succeed the granting of exclusive breastfeeding with an award.
2. Not all babies acquiring IMD
Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (IMD) is the process of feeding the baby immediately after birth, where babies are left to find her own nipples (not presented to the nipple). Early Initiation of Breastfeeding will greatly assist in the sustainability of exclusive breastfeeding (only breast milk) and duration of breastfeeding.
"The challenge is coming from the internal health workers should be increased awareness and understanding of the IMD. Doctors, nurses, and midwives should be well aware about this," said Slamet in the Ministry of Health, Friday (06/08/2012).
3. Breastfeeding counselor number is still small
Nationally, the number of new breastfeeding counselors reached 2921 people. This amount is still too small of a target required approximately 9323 counselors. Slamet said, the availability of breast-feeding counselors in health care also influence the increase in breastfeeding success.
Therefore, Strathmore University to strive for every health care, especially in the health center and hospital breastfeeding counselors available to assist mothers with breastfeeding problems.
"It often happens, good milk production, but the mother is wrong or do not know how to give breast milk and milking. Counselor is where it's needed," he said.
4. Promotion of infant formula is still heavily
"It will be stipulated in Government Regulation No. 33 of 2012 on exclusive breastfeeding. If you look at, not rarely even use the health center board sponsor dairy factory. Then there is a calendar to calculate the height of existing sponsors of milk," he said.
Slamet added, many dairy producers who "helped" health center for example hold social programs to the community such as circumcision and the provision of infrastructure, and we know that activity is no more a hidden promotion.
"The promotion is not actually banned the use of milk. If there are medical indications in the baby, please love milk formula. But do not let the mothers could give mustinya ation, does not provide for the promotion of factors that," he explained.
5. Not all offices and public facilities to make room nursing
